Will you lose your driving privileges over a DWI conviction?

Perhaps you were enjoying a couple of beers with friends and were not concerned about your ability to drive home. Unfortunately, a law enforcement officer noticed you were driving erratically and pulled you over on suspicion of driving while impaired. License suspension was immediate. Now what?

Suspension for DWI

In the state of North Carolina, you will lose your driver’s license for a period of time based on the number of violations you have had and the length of time between. The laws concerning drunk driving have become tougher recently, and the impact of breathalyzer testing has increased. For example, after your arrest for DWI, your driver’s license will be suspended for 30 days. You may be eligible for limited driving privileges after 10 days, and you can pay a fee to have your license reinstated after the 30 days are up. However, if you have a conviction for DWI, you will have to deal with license suspension all over again.

Program participation

Once you get over the shock of losing your driver’s license, you could become more aware of the other penalties you face and what you can do to get the penalties reduced. One way, for example, is to participate in a treatment program. In fact, you must complete a DWI program before the state reinstates your driver’s license.

Next steps

Whether you are a college student, a commercial driver, a nonimmigrant or one of the many thousands of workers in our area of North Carolina, you need your driver’s license to get back and forth to school or your job. You may have children you need to drive to school and to extracurricular activities. You could have an elderly parent or grandparent who relies on you as a driver. This is the time to explore your legal options and seek help in minimizing the penalties you face for DWI and in regaining your driving privileges.
