DWI Or DUI Arrest?

Being charged with driving while impaired (DUI/DWI) can be a frightening experience. Recent changes to DUI/DWI law have greatly increased the potential consequences of a conviction for drunk driving. The law has also greatly increased the impact of breath (Breathalyzer) tests. It is more important than ever to have aggressive representation on your side if charged with DUI or DWI.

The criminal defense lawyers of GPS Law Group can sit down with you, analyze your case and discuss your options. We have many years of experience assisting people throughout the Charlotte region, including Cabarrus County and the university area.

Will You Lose Your License?

Immediately after a DUI or DWI arrest in North Carolina, your license will be suspended for 30 days. After 10 days, you may be eligible for a limited driving privilege during the remainder of the 30 days. After 30 days, you can pay a fee and get your license back in full. If you are convicted, your license will be suspended again.

What Are Your Options?

For many people who depend on their licenses to get back and forth to work and school, having a valid license is a must to maintain their livelihoods and their households. In addition, if you are a commercial driver's license (CDL) holder, a DWI or other traffic-related conviction could pose a significant threat to your elevated license status.

Our attorneys will work with you personally to find the best way to minimize potential punishments. If it is in your best interest to ask for a trial, we are prepared to fight the charges in court.

In most cases, though, the focus is to minimize punishment. In some cases, you may be able to receive a lesser sentence by agreeing to go through a treatment program. Our attorneys will work hard to keep you out of jail, either by plea bargaining, enrolling you in an alcohol treatment program or using other methods.

Representation For College Students And Noncitizens

For students or individuals who are not U.S. citizens, we provide tailored representation for your unique situation.

Although we are not immigration attorneys, we are always cognizant of immigration status when representing noncitizens, because we recognize the negative consequences that can result if you are convicted of a misdemeanor or a more serious offense.

As either a high school or university student, your education and your future may hang in the balance. Our office is close to the University of North Carolina-Charlotte as well as other colleges and universities in the region, making us a convenient option for students who have been charged with DUI or DWI.
